Monday, October 31: Letter Offering a Job

Today you will compose your own letter using the modified block business letter format.

Using your imagination, you will write a letter from a fictitious company that offers someone a job for which they have applied.

Guidelines:

1)     Make up the name of a company and decide what the company’s business is.

2)     Make up the job that you’re offering.

3)     Make up the name of the person getting the job.

4)     Use the modified block business letter format on page 51.

5)     The letter will have several paragraphs and fill up most of one   page.

6)  You will use good grammar and spelling.

7)  The letter should look like it might come from a real company.

We will have a class discussion to decide some things that should go into every offer letter.

Copy the assignment into my outbox. This assignment is worth 5 points.

This lesson pulls together some of the editing features we went over in the last lesson. If you have any questions about using these features (like Undo/Redo), find where they’re listed in the last lesson (Thursday, November 3) and read the exercise they’re found in (like Exercise 11 for Undo/Redo).

Exercise 17 uses the file 17THANKS. You can find it in my outbox in the “readable” folder.

I will stop by your computer and look at your results. You get 3 points for doing this exercise.

Tuesday, November 8: Fonts

Today we’ll be doing two exercises: 19 and 20

They should go quickly – all you need to do is edit two documents.

Read Exercise 19, pages 104-106 and do the exercise on page 106. Pay close attention to the terms on page 104.

Read Exercise 20, pages 109-111. Do the exercise on page 111. Make sure to use the format painter to apply the second set of bold, blue, small caps double underline.

Exercise 19 uses the file 19POSTER. Exercise 20 uses the file 20GOALS. You can find them in my outbox in the “readable” folder. Make sure to save them in your “My Documents” folder, not in the “readable” folder.

I will stop by your computer and look at your results. You get 3 points for doing each exercise.

Wednesday, November 9: Lists

Today’s exercise is based on the On Your Own activity in Exercise 22 (page 119), there are important differences.

Follow the On Your Own steps 1-4, but make a numbered list of at least three goals. For each of the goals make a sub-list of at least two steps you can take to accomplish the goals.

Click here for more details and for an example.

Copy the assignment into my outbox. This assignment is worth 5 points.

Thursday, November 10: Catch up

This is the last day of the quarter. We started late with Microsoft Word, but I’ve been really impressed with your attitude and performance. You’ve been patient with my demands for getting the formatting just right and you’ve put a lot of imagination into your job offer letters and announcements. We’ve learned a lot in the past few weeks:

Computer terms

The inside of a computer

Keyboard shortcuts

Business memo

Auto-text

Block business letter

Modified block business letter

Overtype mode

Editing commands

Clipboard commands

Text alignment

Fonts

Lists

Spend today catching up on any missing assignments, and then work on MicroType. You will need to type at least 35 words per minute with high accuracy by the end of the next quarter.
